 Mission Statement

The Central Oklahoma Vintage Triumph Register (C.O.V.T.R.) was established in 1982 by Triumph owners and enthusiasts for the purpose of preserving the future of the Triumph Marque. Triumph ownership is encouraged but not a prerequisite for membership.  The C.O.V.T.R. sponsors a monthly meeting, monthly SOB’s, car shows, road tours and technical inspections.

From Your President:

Well COVTR members, February has come and gone and hopefully warm top down weather is just around the corner.  Unfortunately, we did not see very many February days that were good for Triumph driving.  It was either too cold, too cloudy or it was freezing rain.  I guess we really can’t expect too much more since this is winter in Oklahoma.  March and April are usually transition months into spring so hopefully everyone will get a chance to blow a little dust off their floorboards real soon.

A great example of our “good old” Oklahoma February weather came when Lonny and Kay Wall had to cancel their annual Frost Bite Run.  Rather than being bitterly cold (which is why they call it a Frost Bite Run) like last year, it rained all weekend.  There is perhaps, a silver lining to the Walls rain cloud.  Dennis Eckhout has offered to give-up his March St. Patrick’s Day Tulsa Run in order for the Frost Bite Run to be rescheduled and to continue the yearly event.  I was told that if all the necessary travel arrangements can be made as previously planned, they will bring it up for discussion at our March meeting.  Whether it’s a Wall or Eckhout Run, let’s hope for great driving weather.

It looks like there is good news from this years Leake Auction event.  There were about twenty members who signed-in on both Friday and Saturday.  That’s absolutely wonderful!!  It was great that this year, unlike last year, the old folks (like me) didn’t have to push all those hot rods around.  It sure made a difference at the end of the day.  A super special thanks goes to everyone who showed-up, signed-in and pitched-in to make the two day event a COVTR success.  I would be remiss if I didn’t give another special thanks to Mike Billotte.  His hard work in coordinating all the COVTR involvements made it easier and better for us all.  I know it’s the millionth time it’s been said, but again it shows that we have the greatest members any club could possibly ask for.  As of this writing, Mike doesn’t have the final dollar participation totals, but he is fairly certain we met our goal that was established during our last meeting.  I’m sure he will bring us up to date at our March club meeting.

One final note.  For you folks who would like to learn a little more about keeping your Triumph’s paint looking spiffy, in the near future Dennis Eckhout has agreed to give us a tech session on “buffing and polishing”.  He will demonstrate his expertise by using both an orbital and non-orbital buffing machine.  Since buffing can be hazardous to your paint job, learning a few of the dos and don’ts should be helpful to everyone.

Thanks again to everyone for your participation in the Leake Auction!  Hopefully we’ll see you at our March 4th regular monthly meeting and on the road to either Enid or Tulsa.  Everyone take care and please drive safe.

Jerry Stewart

From the Veep:

We finally have confirmation of what we all suspected.  Triumph is the “Collectible Car of the Year.”  I hope each of you read the article I e-mailed to you from The New York Times, dated Feb. 17, 2008.  As I read this I got all tingly as I realized I was a part of something that’s at the top.  It’s like being the sister of Miss America, or having a cameo role in a movie that wins an Oscar, or being married to the owner of a British car restoration business…oh, wait.  I am married to that person!

The weather has been so topsy-turvy recently that we have had to be ready to go for a drive in-between ice and snow.  But Presidents’ Day was such a day.  John and I took a drive in Frank and Joyce Steindl’s TR3B.  John had been doing some work on that cute, little, red thing and we went for a “test drive.”  It was sunny, yet cool and we really enjoyed some fresh Triumph air.  Thanks, Frank.

I am re-working the membership form to make room, as Anne Gingerich suggested, for e-mail addresses.  If you change e-mail addresses or want the club to use an additional address, please send it to me.  The purpose is to make sure everyone knows what’s happening.  Remember:  As spring approaches and we’re out driving, you might see some Triumph lovers that just haven’t found COVTR.  Introduce them to this group that celebrates the “Collectible Car of the Year.”

Activities Report

As I round up the activity list once again, I’m saddened to say that we no “Sooner” found out where to meet for the Mystery Frostbite Run SOB (scheduled for 2/16/08) that it had to be canceled.  “Hateful weather” and dangerous road conditions were the cause.

Our next activity, the Leake Auction, was held at State Fair Park on Feb. 22nd & 23rd.  Members didn’t have to push cars J this year!  This was an initiation for me, as I’d never been to a car auction before.  What an assortment of vehicles!  Everything from vintage to modern, and in every hue imaginable!

Hope to see you at our next meeting on Tuesday Mar 4 at Shorty Small’s.  We’ll be chatting up the auction action, and Dennis Eckhout will give us the details on his “Ides if March” run to ???????????

March 9th is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, so remember to set your clocks forward 1 hour.

Cheers, Anne Gingerich

Membership Meeting Minutes

COVTR Membership Meeting

February 5, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Stewart at 7:15 pm.  He recognized the large turnout.  Mike Billotte then presented the new embroidery logo and new membership cards.

Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:  Bill Gingerich

Membership Report:  Jean Scott Gauldin

New member Leonard Hansen was introduced.

Activities:  Anne Gingerich

The Frostbite originally scheduled for February 17 has been rescheduled for March 15th.

Lonny Wall announced that the Frostbite Rally will be a trip to Enid.  The destination will be Simpson’s Mercantile and Movie Studio.  Participants will meet at the Visitor's Center across from Love’s at I-35 and N.E. 122 at 8:00 am and leave promptly at 8:15 am.  They will travel up 77 highway through the Wildcat Curves, and then turn west to Enid.  Lunch will be at Callahan’s.

Dennis Eckhout reported that the restaurant scheduled for the March SOB to Tulsa is not open for lunch.  He suggested the Knotty – pine or Killkenny’s as substitutes.  Killkenny’s was selected.

Old Business:

Mike Billotte reported that club shirts will be ready if the logo is approved.  Jerry Stewart made the motion to approve and it was seconded by Jean Scott Gauldin.   Discussion of the logo embroidery followed.  The motion with minor changes was accepted.

Questions were asked about the Leake Auction.  Mike Billotte spoke to the question.  He needs lots of workers if the club is to make any money.  The club will get $6 per person per hour worked.  Car pushers were lousy last year and members do not want, or are not able to push cars.  Mike has had no luck at getting pushers.  They are now looking for people who would like to make approximately $100 by working pushing cars for Friday, 9 to 6 and Saturday, 9 to 7.  The other question was whether non-members could volunteer to donate time to the club.  The answer is yes.

New Business:

Red River Shootout – Howard Wise, who has volunteered to set up the event, suggested Duncan as the location. No other locations were suggested.  The date will be in late October.

Jerry Stewart suggested getting a list of cell phone numbers for the SOB’s.  Jerry will take care of making the list.

Bitch and Brag:

Lonny Wall reported on how good the COVTR website looks and how much Kay has done for the site.

Frank Steindl reported on his car accident and resulting injuries and how much he appreciated the club’s flowers and visits.

Door Prizes:

Flashlight – Howard Wise

Car Wax – Robert Wall

D-ring – Lonny Wall

Bungee Cord – Mike Billotte

Calendars – Frank Steindl, Nancy Wise, Jackie Wall, and Kelly Gilbert

Magazines – Jim Ware and Bill Gingerich

Vote was requested on the membership cards.  Suggestions to remove dots and to use upper case letters were made.  It was finally left up to the Membership chairperson.

Meeting Adjourned at 8:00 pm.
